Answer:

it’s the same as other cheap student horns of the period…..there’s no market for them……they were built with durability in the hands of children in mind, not musicality

Hi Steve,A customer of mine has recently purchased one of your Evolution alto sax necks, which I have just fitted for him. There is one of your neck enhancers fitted as standard. How are these fitted, only it seems “stuck” in the neck. Is it soldered, glued or just an interference fit? My customer wants to try the neck with and without the enhancer, but I didn’t want to force it out without knowing how it was fitted.ThanksPaul

Answer:

they are installed with an industrial adhesive. The enhancer is part of the design parameter of the neck.

One of your hi-end competitors offers a curved soprano in solid silver. You (used to) offer one that is practically solid copper. Since I’ve tried neither of them can you describe the difference between the two types?

Answer:

Copper gives a broader spectrum, with more mids and lows. This is important in preventing the soprano from sounding thin and shrill. Silver responds quicker, but sounds pretty much like brass.

Just picked up a conn tenor saxophone. serial number shows that it is a very early 1955. Think its a 16M because of the pinky table but has no model number stamped om it. Engraving is very plain with just Conn ect. Keys are that silver color and body is brass colored., No rolled tone holes Did Conn send out some horns without the model number, or was this one of the first models they have not yet decided on the model number.

Mr. Goodson,I received one of your hard rubber alto mouthpieces for Christmas and it plays like a dream. It really helps me get the dark, rich sound that I love so much. My dad said you told him you only face them with a .073 tip opening when he called, but the top of the piece is stamped .090. Is that the size of the opening or is it a .073? Either way it plays beautifully with my unfiled 3M reeds, I’d just like to know for sure so I can know which reeds would match best with it. I hope you’ve had a very merry Christmas! Thanks!

there are ribs or “flutes” on the mouthpiece interior

Hi Steve, you may remember me, Dave from Canada with the 28M alto? I have a question about my Conn New Wonder 1921. I cannot seem to use a Brilhart short shank large chamber mouthpiece on my horn, I have to pull out so far on the mouthpiece, it literally falls off the the neck cork before I can tune it. It is way sharp. I have to use a smaller chamber, longer shank piece, yet my Florida link works, but am still left not being able to use certain pieces. I posted my question on Vintage Conn saxophone Corner at https://www.facebook.com/groups/93835376526/. Can you offer me some advice. You can post right on the Facebook page if you like. Hi Steve. I enjoy your Tuesday night videos. I have an Antiqua Winds Soprano which gurglles on the lower notes. You have said that the fix is to thread the inside of the neck. Is this something that my local repairman can do? Or is this something that I should send to you?

We don’t offer that service. I would think any good repair shop could do that for you. When it’s done, be sure that the neck tenon and the body receiver are both perfectly round.

Answer:

Those horns are a great buy. They play just as well as the earlier 10m’s and can be had at a fraction of the price. I think all of the production years are the same.

Do you know the little padded piece of metal that pushes the octave key up and down, on the tenor sax? I broke that and i wanted to ask you if that is fixable, and if you know how much it`ll cost.

Answer:

that’s an easy fix and any repair shop should be able to take care of it for you. You would need to speak with them about what they would charge.

I just watched your great seminar What’s wrong with my saxophone? I didn’t see my issue covered. My top of staff G# is extremely sensitive to attack, and doesn’t always speak clearly. I do not have that problem anywhere else on my sax. I can’t really tell you how long it’s been going on. I use a Jody DV, Zonda reeds (3 or 4), and the Gardala tenor. Do you have any idea what this could possibly be? Thanks, Steve.

Answer:

the problem is almost certainly with the body octave pip. Your G# is at the extreme range of that pip (D2 – G#2), and you can resolve the problem by replacing the pip with our Power Pips. This is a very common issue with all B&S made saxophones.

sure there are: the King Super 20, the SML, the Pierret, the Couf Superba I, the Buescher 400, the Conn 10M, the Leblanc, and lots of others……of these, the Pierret Super Artiste is my favorite

Have a Conn Tenor New Wonder II with the nail file G# key. It has an engraving of a lady flapper from the 20′s and flowers all, down the bell, but on the web I have found that if it has that much engraving on it must be a New Wonder I, because of that.The s/n puts at the very, very beginning of the series 2. A little confused. Could it be a series I and could of Conn just added the nail file G# key. How else could you tell the difference between the two other then the s/n of the G# key? Ant other key differences, or spacing between them, ect.?

stop reading sax on the web……almost certainly, your horn is a New Wonder II…..quite a few of them were very elaborately engraved by the Stenberg brothers, who were Conn’s staff engravers in the 1920′s……send me some clear, detailed pictures to saxgourmet@cox.net and I’ll tell you more after I see it

sure……I’ll check it out and send you some pictures but you have to give me your email address…..we bought these when Conn closed their Nogales operation……I’m unaware of anyone who sells key cups….

use the Extreme Roo pads and our Power Point resonators…….it’s the optimum setup, and what a nice horn like that deserves

I picked up a used Super Dynaction tenor neck, but it appears the neck was pulled down then straightened again, but it flattens out at the bow where it fits into the horn. Can that be fixed? I only paid $15.00 for it. It plays but fells stuffy…. (not my gig neck, just want an extra at that price.) PS also I open up the keys on my super Dynaction sax to 30% of the diameter of the tone hole as you advise, boy what a difference in the sound ! It now goes match the sound of my buddy’s 1961 Mark VI. Thanks Steve for this great info., and will help a lot of our dynaction players.

What other vintage mouthpieces would work best on it, The ones it came with it play in tune but they don’t project enough.. Also will any of your mouthpieces work?

Good Day Mr Chairman and Chief Company Car cleaner Before I purchase a neck for my Selmer Mark V1 alto manufactured in 1968 in France (gold and silver) but after 4 times around the globe it still looks good, she has never let me down – I on the other hand many times have,, not enough long tones etc etc. My set up varies from always an ebonite m/p either a Yani 7 or an original G Selmer all fairly open and a variety of reeds:- Rico Jazz Select 2HVandoren 2.5 or Hemke 2.5. My main gigs are small combo, Royal Marines Concert Band format and a busy duo. Most of my venues are medium sized halls and or open air situations ( not street busking)Back to my question Steve, Which neck from your stable of necks, do you feel would enhance my sound.Evolution copper or gold laquared type your latest version has caught my eye and ear! Additional unique weight enhancing just seems so right.I look forward to reading your commentsKindest regardsDavid

Answer:

The Evolution model solid copper neck will give the best results……when we were designing this series, the prototype was developed on my 104,000 Mk VI

Hi Steve Is a Kohlert model 55 tenor a good horn? Just got one from my Uncle. Lacquer pretty much gone but no major dents, and has rolled tone holes. Has the neck and the brace somewhat looks like “the moon on the moon” silhouette. Nice full woody sound. What’s your thoughts on this horn, because I don’t see many of these around, and would you use a large chamber or small chamber mouthpiece with it.

Answer:

while not my personal favorite, those horns do have a “cult” following due to their unusually dark and rich sound. Be careful about the pitch….you’ll need a large chamber mouthpiece to have any kind of chance of being in tune with the rest of the band.

Steve , I have a conn sax with a very low serial number 7128 , from what I can find out it is from early 1900′s . I am not a music guy and am interested in selling it. I took it to the our local store for inspection, The Magic Flute in San Rafael Ca. Rob Roth owner recommended I reach out to you. He felt the piece was in very good condition but would require rebuilding due to age. If you have any interest I can take photos and send them to you. Thank You in advance for any help or interest. Unless it is a gold plated Virtuoso Deluxe model, it’s probably not worth the cost of an overhaul….old does not = valuable. There’s really no market for those horns except for the extremely rare Virtuoso Deluxe models.

Aloha Steve, I have a MKVI tenor that I had re-silver-plated and engraved; when I got it back, they had not painted the area of the Selmer neck around the Selmer “S” blue (French blue) as it was originally when I bought if. Is this something you do, or can farm out, or at least recommend someone, or someplace that can do this ? Thanks a million !

Answer:

you can EASILY do this yourself: get a tiny bottle of the correct color enamel at a hobby shop (Testors is the preferred brand)…..apply to the octave key with a small brush or Q-tip…..immediately wipe off any excess with a paper towel…..allow to dry completely…..clean off any excess with toothpaste (very small amount) on a paper towel.

If the mouthpiece tip opening controls “gain”, what does the reed strength do? I’ve recently done some serious practicing after almost retiring. I’ve gone from a 2.5 to a 4 in a couple of months. I’ve noticed more stability and it’s easier to get altissimo. but it’s a little harder to articulate my low notes. Once they sound I can still play pianissimo, and it may just be that I’m still mastering a #4. Is it “better” to have a bigger mpc tip opening and slightly lighter reed or vice versa, or does it even matte? What are the trade-offs? Thx! I use the Gardala Earth Tone Sax with the Goodson nodal neck & the Espina DV 7. Thx!

Answer:

so who says that the tip opening controls volume? The profile of the reed (regardless of strength) should match the profile of the mouthpiece facing……that’s the most important aspect….the reed must also freely “wrap” around the facing……the strength of the reed is not nearly as important as the match between the reed and the curve

the keys should be open 30% of the diameter of the tone hole

there is a Mk VI pad size chart on my www.saxgourmet.com site. Be on notice that the pad sizes used often varied during the production run.

yes, we still have that neck. The power pips will improve intonation and quicken 1response

I have a 1950 Martin Committee 3 alto sax which needs the neck octave key flat spring and the screw that holds it in,also the adjustable thumb rest screw…I have a rubber band wrapped around the octave key and a regular philips screw holding the thumb rest..Can you help me with this?..Thank you sir.

Answer:

The flat spring and screw are generic items that any repair shop will have. The thumb rest screw is something that they will probably have to adapt another part for. Lots of instruments use a thumb screw that is similar, but you’ll probably have to recut the screw threads to match your Martin.

Could a 1958 Buffet Super Dynaction Tenor sax be made in hi pitch? If so how could you tell other than it does not have a pitch of A440. Would there be any markings on the horn?

Answer:

Buffet currently makes some A=442 horns, but that’s a long way from high pitch A=456. I’ve never seen a Super Dynaction that was anything but A=440

In his later years, he was also a saxophone repairman for many in San Diego and Los Angeles. My husband passed away and I have some of his saxophones. Before he died he told me to never sell them if I could not ask a trustworthy, knowledgeable expert to tell me about them and their value. Get the “Evolution” model…..we have sold a lot of them to Guardala owners. They have been universally delighted!

The fact that it is a Mk VII is all I need to know…..we make a version of our Evolution solid copper neck specifically for that horn. It’s even on sale right now!

I’m playing a Dukoff that simply kicks my ass, It was a D5 opened to a .095 tip. I’m having jaw issues when I attempt to play upper register. Would you recommend a more modern mouthpiece or can the Dukoff be tamed? I play a Yamaha custom Z legere sig 2.5More generally, can mouthpieces be tuned? What parts of a mouthpiece determine its intonation “Quality”?

If your horn has a single socket receiver (which one from that serial number range should) we make a version of our Evolution solid copper neck for it.

Any horns I have overohauled for my personal use will have Roo Extreme pads and Saxgourmet Power Point resonators, oversized for that particular horn……Trust me….if you want the absolute best set up available, this is it…..be sure to use a large chamber mouthpiece so the intonation will be right

Answer:

without seeing it I can’t tell you much except that it sounds like you have a very serious problem. Several different things will cause the problem you describe, all of which are probably expensive to fix.

Hello Steve – I have recently acquired a Vespro brand soprano sax. The only identification available seems to be engraving “0710″ above thee serial number. As you probably know, there very little information on these saxophones, but I have a feeling you might know something about it. My main curiosity is what class instrument this was in Vespro’s offering, and ballpark retail when it was being sold, but really any information would be appreciated. Thank you!

Answer:

When I worked for Orpheus Music (I was in charge of saxophone design and manufacturing) we owned and manufactured the Vespro brand. The horns were sourced from Tenon and were manufactured at the Crown Hope factory in Viet Nam. There was absolutely no sequence to the serial numbers. At the time, I think the straight soprano sold for abut $700. I have no idea who owns the brand name now, since Orpheus went out of business a couple of years after I left.

I don’t know the model number…..that horn is basically a Yamaha YAS-23

There’s not a lot of interest in Yani’s that old…..I’d say that the best one in the world in PERFECT cosmetic and playing condition is a $1,000 horn….deduct for condition

That’s a horn from the early 1980s….I’d say that the best one in the worldn (in PERFECT condition, not good condition, but PERFECT, needing nothing) is a $500 horn

we provide the specifications i.e. bore taper and tone hole placement and specify the alloy. We design and provide drawings of any unique keywork and mechanisms. We generally tell the factory what we want with regard to engraving patterns and cosmetics. Our manufacturing process is generally the same as Apple Computers: we work with trusted factories with whom we have long standing relationships, and are in constant contact with them throughout the development process.

Steve, I have just acquired a 1958 VI tenor. The thumbrest screw will not turn to adjust angle. My local repairmen tried briefly but stopped out of fear of breaking the screw. Suggestions? Penetrating oil?

(1) apply penetrating oil liberally (I use PB Blaster)

(2) allow to penetrate for 30 minutes

(3) apply heat (soldering iron works well)

(4) tap lightly with a small plastic hammer

(5) use a LARGE screwdriver to turn screw

dust the pads lightly with Mojo’s….then spritz with a small amount of water….then iron so the Mojo’s is forced into the pores of the leather……..then brush with a small amount of Voodoo Pad Juice

I would like to buy one of the modern horns on the market: Cannonball, Mauriat, Saxgourmet, Yamaha, whatever. Here’s my problem Steve and this is where I need Your expertise and advice: My pinkys are very short. 1 7/8 inches long to be exact. Whenever I try to play one of the newer horns my pinky can’t reach the left hand pinky cluster keys. My Martin has a more compact key placement. I can reach the low Bb, B, and C# keys. On the newer horns it seems like the left hand pinky keys are further down on the stack and more to the side of the stack, so not only does my pinky need to stretch and reach downward, it also has to try to reach further back. Its very frustrating and uncomfortable, in fact it hurts. So here’s my question Steve. Since there is no way to make my pinky longer, is there a way to relocate the left hand pinky cluster on a newer tenor sax to bring the keys closer to my pinky? If so, which brand tenor would you recommend I buy? And have you ever had to modify the location of keys for anyone before ?

Rousseau classic 4R, the Otto Link tone edge, as well as Morgan. I have been considering the Selmer S80, S90 and soloist models but have heard that the consistency is a bit sketchy and from experience from my S80 on alto that they are a bit restrictive, and the Vandoren optimum tenor piece. What would be your suggestion? I have been playing alto for about 10 years and am fairly new to tenor.

it’s caused by the copper leaching out of the brass…..if you want to remove it you’ll have to strip the lacquer and polish it off. It will significantly reduce the retail value of your horn.

My band mates tell me to save up and buy a Selmer 80II or Yamaha 82z but the deal is the Buffet is in my budget now and costs only $2500.00 out the door at the music store and costs less than a student Yamaha. Would I be foolish to jump on this opportunity or should I save my money for a used Selmer or Yamaha? I play garage band Jazz, funk, blues and rock. My current horn is old beaten up Pawn shop find an old worn out Evette. It needs an overhaul that costs more than the $70.00 bucks I used to buy it 2 years ago. It served me well getting back in the game but now its time to move on. Any advice would be appreciated.

First, why aren’t you looking at our Saxgourmet saxophones? If the Buffet is truly PERFECT (not good, but perfect) $2500 is a fair price.

First, I haven’t worked for Unison for about 15 years, so I am not familiar with their current horns. I doubt that there is any correlation between the serial number and the model number, but I don’t know for sure. ALL of the Steve Goodson Models are so engraved on the bell flare.

Yes, it’s Mojo’s………the hose from the steamer only needs to go in the bell far enough to direct the steam through the horn, not out the bell…..yes, that’s the right size to drill out the pips

I have never seen a “buzz” screw, and have never heard of Matt Lee …… I’m not aware of any contributions he has made to the saxophone world……you only need one of our high mass screws for a Super 400 Series II….. you’ll love the difference! Lot’s of Super 400 owners have bought them and love them! Does the Matt Lee know the unique thread pitch of the Super 400? It’s very different from a Selmer, Yamaha etc……

you can easily determine high or low pitch (if the horn is unmarked) very easily with a tuner……if it doesn’t tune to standard (A=440) pitch easily, then you have a problem

I use Aircraft brand aerosol stripper. Since it’s an aerosol, it gets into the nooks and crannies very well. It’s very, very, dangerous, so wear rubber gloves, eye protection, protective clothing, and a respirator. Yamaha 23 lacquer is very difficult to remove since it’s baked on epoxy.

if you own a 1965 10M, it has a double socket neck, which we don\'t currently manufacture. The later 10M\'s are dimensionally identical to the earlier versions, but have some minor keywork and cosmetic variations.

the Yamaha neck is basically a straight cone....if you will play the overtone series on your horn, you will note that the overtones get progressively sharper as they increase in pitch.....you must compensate for this by using a parabolic cone taper, which we do......the two necks have different average diameters (the Evolution is larger) and are made from different materials: the Evolution is copper, which is darker.

My sax teacher was upset at not buying a Selmer and claimed time and time again the horn played out-of-tune and suggested I investigate necks. No internet or access to that concept at that time, so I eventualIy moved on to another career and started playing in a community band about 6-years ago. The horn has been a constant problem in the upper register. Mid and lower register corrected with stronger reed. A local tech put new Roo pads on it about 4-years ago and problems still persisted. They looked at it again a few months ago and opened the keys up against my wishes, claiming they just set it to spec. Well, its worse. From D2 on up it 15-25 cents sharp. So I am wondering if it really could be the neck? The intonation is fine until activating the octave key. I just need some direction. Music Medic wanted $1700-$2200 to re-do the horn and doubt its the neck. The horn is only worth about $2200 per your prices, so I am not sure what to believe or how much to invest. If you use metals that are heavy, you then change the balance of the horn significantly. Even a couple of ounces makes a big difference. Minimal weight is the only way to go.

If it's in good shape, that can be a real bargain. They sourced horns sold under the Evette brand name from many different factories. The serial numbers mean nothing due to all of the different sources.

01/20/2015 - Mike Medley asks: Sax Necks "Hi, Steve!\r\n\r\nI have interest in replacing a few necks for my horns. I have a \"matching set\" of NY anodized nickel Dave Guardala alto and tenor saxes, though I think they are the B&S-manufactured ones. They were the last ones of the set that WWBW had when I had a theft of my first MkVI tenor in 2006. The Guardalas came with two necks - silver and the nickel plated to match the horns. Both necks on both horns sound a bit bright to my taste. On my alto, neither neck cares for metal mouthpieces (Bari, Larsen, Link, JodyJazz) - they balk and misbehave in various/different registers. For my tenor, the Ponzol M2 Plus in gold plate and a metal Brillhart are difficult to play on the horn. The Ponzol HR plays just fine, as do a C* (round chamber), and Rousseau New Classic. For the alto, Meyer, Rousseau, Semer Larry Teal, Jody Jazz HR all play fine. I also have a MkVI tenor (another) that has a somewhat crushed neck. It does not play very well at all. \r\n\r\nWhat can you offer for these different situation/setups?\r\n\r\nThanks!!!\r\n\r\nMike Medley" Answer:

The color does not matter, but the material makes a big difference! We use copper in our horns, and believe it gives the broadest spectrum of sound.

02/15/2014 - Will Card asks: Why the ridges on resonators? "I really like the look of the resonators you use on your Saxgourmet horns. Besides looking great, do the ridges have an acoustic function?" Answer:

The ridges on the resonators serve only to increase the surface area.....they have no acoustic function outside of presenting a larger resonating surface......the exposed leather of the pad acts like a sponge and absorbs the sound......for this reason, the resonators should be as large as possible and the exposed pad leather kept to an absolute minimum.

02/14/2014 - Jeremiah Strickland asks: polishing the interior "Wouldn't polishing the inside of the horn make the air flow better?" Answer:

no....a slight roughness creates a "boundary layer" which acts as a lubricant and reduces friction. This is the same reason a golf ball has dimples. The reduction in friction allows the wave to pass more easily through the horn. It's the wave that matters, not the air!

02/13/2014 - Bill Moon asks: LA Sax serial numbers "I know you worked for LA Sax and wondered if you have a list of serial numbers that would enable me to date my alto. It\'s a black horn with gold keys and says LA Sax on the bell. It has a high G key and an extra front key just below the B. I have had it since 2006, and have always been very happy with it." Answer:

There's only one model series of LA Sax that has the high G key and upper stack speaker key: the 750/850 alto and tenor. These horns were built by Foo Pin in Taiwan, and I always thought they were the very best horns to ever wear that name. LA ax serial numbers are not and never were sequential and mean nothing. They are useless for dating a horn or identifying a specific model.

Nice to hear from you, Will! Yes, more octave keys would be better from an acoustic point of view. In fact, twelve would be the perfect number, with a dedicated octave key for every semi-tone of the chromatic scale. Unfortunately, that would be a mechanical nightmare, so it's just not practical. Yes, those were great horns. We haven't manufactured that model in over eight years, although an improved version of the altissimo system is used on our Category Five tenor. Many of the features found on the Steve Goodson Model will be found on the Category Three model when we decide to introduce it.

Insofar as I know, no such resource exists. I've had dealings with most of the Taiwanese factories and many of the major Chinese factories, and pretty much know (or can tell by examining a horn) which factory made it. Most of the factories will make anything youn want. The horns made for different brands are almost never the same.

There is absolutely no reason this should be the case, unless the horn is poorly designed. There's a guy in Brazil building them down to low G with no problem. All you have to do is pay attention to the math. Of course, it is necessary to actually KNOW the math in the first place!

02/01/2014 - Charles Wallace asks: Centering Keys "I have noticed that on almost every saxophone I have examined there are at least some keys that are not centered over the tone hole. Is it possible to center these keys, and if so, how do you do it? Is it a problem than some of the keys are off centered? All of the pads seem to seal perfectly. I can\'t figure out how to fix this!" Answer:

I've done that a few times, and honestly believe it is an awful lot of work for a very marginal benefit. It actually DOES make the horn feel a little better in your hands. You center the key cup over the tone hole by bending the arm which attaches the cup to the rod. It takes a lot of trial and error, and you have to be super careful to avoid damaging the keys. Most keys are aligned plenty well enough from the factory. Like most other things in life, you pay a lot for that last 5% of perfection.

02/01/2014 - Harry Conoley asks: Wooden resonators "I took your advice and got a copy of the Ernest Ferron book \"The Saxophone Is My Voice\". It\'s a real treasure trove of information. He suggests using ebony wood discs as resonators and gluing them directly to the pad leather. I would like to hear your thought on this." Answer:

I did try that......I had a friend make a beautiful set of ebony resonators, custom sized for one of my Selmers....I glued them on using contact cement, which worked well enough......after a while, the resonators caused the leather to stretch and sag a little bit......they were just too heavy.

well, since every job will be a custom job, we charge the base shop rate ($100/hr), billing for actual time. That's a lot less than my plumber, lawyer,accountant, doctor, or electrician charge me! We can turn it around in a week usually.

the later ones have S-1 style keywork.......I owned and used one for a while......I'm pretty sure the neck and tube are the same as the older ones........why aren't you looking at our Saxgourmet horns? If you like the Buffet, you will LOVE the Voodoo Rex!

the problem seems to be that you have to individually fit the baffles....there is just too much variation in mouthpieces to offer "off the shelf" baffles.....we've made quite a few for customers who sent us their mouthpiece, and they've all been very happy.

If properly designed (which doesn't always happen!) there is no reason that extending the range should alter the natural sound of the horn.As you may know, several of our Saxgourmet models have an extended range to high G. The problem arises when horn manufacturers don't "do the math: and fail to calculate the proper placement and configuration of the keys.

I believe that a curved soprano is FAR superior......with a straight soprano you are playing directly into the floor, not your microphone or your audience.....it's also hard to hear yourself with a straight soprano......this is why we only manufacture the very finest curved soprano in the world

Unfortunately, no.....this feature is exclusive to our horns (we use it on the Super 400 series and on the Category Five) and we don't offer it any other way. It only comes with a saxophone attached!

01/08/2014 - Kevin Sinclair asks: upper octave key "Steve,When my octave key on the neck closes, fingering G after A, it does a short series of settling bounces. I\'ve tried adjusting the spring, but am at that point of diminishing returns whereby the spring starts to be to soft making the key close sluggishly and not as responsive as desired. It happens in a fraction of a second so sound-wise it is that perceptible except for the unfavorable effect of setting the reed into \"overtone\" instability.\r\nAny experience with this and/or suggestions for remedy?" Answer:

I suspect that if you have adjusted the spring tension properly that the problem lies with some minor binding in the mechanism. Disassemble the entire mechanism and be certain that each part moves perfectly freely on its rod. While you have it taken apart, be sure that all of the silencing materials are perfectly smooth.This is a good time to replace any cork or felt with Teflon. You didn't tell me the brand and model of the horn, and this makes diagnoses extremely difficult.since there is a great deal of differentiation.

01/06/2014 - Michael asks: Saxophone case "I recently got a Reference 54 alto and love it, however the molded case that it came in is far too small to cary anywhere near all my gear with me, and I am fairly mobile as I am in an Army band. I am looking at a Protech Pro Pac case but concerned about how well it will hold the saxophone in place. It seems well reviewed but I want to do my due diligence. In my many years of playing I have never dropped a case from more than a foot high, but I do want to have my bases covered. What is your opinion of this pairing, and/or what case would you recommend for a budget? I know Bam makes selmer cases, but they are pricey." Answer:

Money spent for a good case is the best money you can spend, and a case (particularly as much as you travel) is not the place to "cheap out".....I highly recommend Walt Johnson cases......I've used them myself for many years, often in conjunction with Anvil flight cases.....be sure to ALWAYS keep your horn in key clamps when traveling.....this will help prevent damage. 01/04/2014 - Bob Barton asks: Plastic Saxophones "What is your take on the plastic saxophones recently introduced by Vibrato-sax?" Answer:

I think it may prove to be a good idea, but right now their execution of the concept is not too good. There are some real issues with pitch and intonation. Another issue is that the price has risen to the point that there is no longer a price advantage enjoyed by the Vibrato-Sax. For the same money, you can buy a better playing conventional saxophone. I think the only advantage they currently have is novelty.

Most saxophones are made from a brass alloy that is around 30% zinc and 70% copper.....if you increase the amount of copper and decrease the amount of zinc, the horn will be darker.....increase the zinc and it will be brighter.......bronze, which contains copper and tin, is also fairly dark.....silver responds quickly, and is a little bright sounding......nickel silver less so......

After watching some of your youtube videos and reading some of your articles, I\'ve come to the conclusion you must be quite knowledgable of the saxophone. This is a question I\'ve had in mind a while, and I am saving up to get a new alto sax as I plan to persevere a career playing, so I thought I\'d ask; How do different platings and finishes affect a saxophone\'s sound? I\'d like to know what you can tell me about these finishes specifically: honey gold, cognac gold, unlacquered(or no finish), gold plated, silver plated, black nickel plated, nickel plated and brushed nickel finish. I\'d like to know which of these finishes can give me a sound that\'s big and clear with a solid tonal core, and can be made bright or dark by me changing my embouchre. In other words, which of these finishes would give the most versatile sound which could be shaped by the player? the finish has absolutely no effect whatsoever of any form or fashion on the sound or the response of a saxophone......none......zero.....na na.....the final finish, whether it is lacquer or plating, is typically about 3/10.000ths of an inch thick....far too thin to have any effect.....the thing that makes the difference is the alloy used to make the horn.....every alloy has a different resonance pattern.....generally, more copper yields more lower overtones, more zinc makes the horn brighter, and sterling silver quickens the response

I\'ve Vento and I\'ve seen Orpheo bass saxophones at musicfactorydirect.com for around the same price; maybe $3500 +/-. I\'ve also seen a bass sax called The Hawk. I think they tried to pay job age to Coleman Hawkins and it came in various finishes.\r\nI really want a bass sax but seeing as how offering from Selmer and Keilwerth are the price of a fully loaded car or truck they can be pretty hard to afford on my salary.\r\nIs this a descent bass sax to go with or am I better off going with International Woodwinds or something like that?" the International Woodwinds horn is the very same......there are two factories in China which manufacture bass saxophones: Jinyin, which makes a "Conn style" and Jinbao, which makes a "Selmer stye".....the bass called the Hawk has nothing to do with Coleman Hawkins.....the USA representative for the company is named Hawk Yan.....I have known him and done business with him for many years.....I rather doubt that anybody at Jinyin has a clue who Coleman Hawkins is......the Jinyin made bass is not bad.....if you buy one, expect to have to throw some money at it to get it adjusted and de-leaked......their set up works is, to be kind, terrible

Man.... wouldn't have thought anybody would have noticed.....I had forgotten myself......that's a Saxgourmet "Marcel" classical model.....we only made a short run of them in 2005.....I still have that one.......it's strictly for classical playing.....we decided that, as good as the Marcel was, the market just wasn't big enough to warrant making a lot of them......I still use it when I'm teaching Ferling.......

Yes, we make a 10M specific neck for your horn. Beware of anybody who tries to tell you that the same neck works on all horns. Ford parts generally don't work on Chevrolets.....We make a neck for all single socket 10M's

it was a lot of fun, but it took a lot of my time to administer......we had lots of troll attacks......I've discontinued it in favor of Facebook groups. The groups that I maintain on Facebook are: Professional Saxophone Players Saxophones and Saxophone Equipment for Sale Saxophone Repair Saxophone Mouthpieces Saxophone and Instrument Engraving Vintage and Collector Saxophones Musician Humor Saxophone Teaching All of these groups have hundreds of members and are extremely active. The Facebook system, although not perfect, really helps to screen prospective members.

12/22/2013 - Steve Fraizer asks: Leveling rolled tone holes "My Conn 6M has a few tone holes that are not level. I\'ve heard of several different ways to get them trued up, but would like your take on the best method." Answer:

You should leave well enough alone unless the tone hole is really out of kilter! Adjust the pad if at all possible. If you simply must level the tone hole, do NOT do so by hammering underneath the tone hole to raise portions of it! This changes the bore diameter and does other damage that may be next to impossible to fix. When I must get one level, I use an old Conn Reso-Pad ring of the correct diameter and solder it onto the top of the tone hole. These can be easily adjusted, and won't damage the horn.

I'm not aware of any stainless steel springs that are the same quality as the blued springs which are available. Kraus Musical used to sell some great ones, but they've been discontinued. The advantage of stainless was that it didn't rust.....well, we are now going one better: we have available our high quality blued steel springs with 18Kt gold plate.....beautiful to look at, they also don't rust

the main thing to keep ion mind is to narrow the rails, not alter the facing curve.......be VERY careful!......if you only want to narrow the rails, do it from the inside......give me a call if I can answer any questions

08/13/2013 - Ernesto J. Ponce asks: Unison 6003L "Greetings,\\r\\n So last year when I was looking for an affordable tenor I found an 6003L on-line and was able to snag it for $500. I play pretty regularly with a couple groups around the Baltimore area and I\\\'ve been playing my keyboard player\\\'s YAS-62 II; had the Unison on the side as I just assumed the Yamaha was a better horn. And it is in many ways; I find the 62 to be precise, consistent, and the build is as solid as it gets, but..... I hate playing that thing! Un-inspiring and sterile is the only way I can describe it. So, I pulled the Unison out and found that it feels so much more like I want a sax to feel like, and I didn\\\'t get that harsh, stringent tone I was getting mainly in the upper register of the Yamaha. To me, it actually felt more like a \\\"pro\\\" horn, at least in the sense of resonance, resistance, harmonic complexity, etc. I can make the Unison sing more than I can the Yamaha.\\r\\n So my question is this. It will be a while until I can afford a \\\"pro\\\" horn so I was wondering what are the smartest (most affordable) modifications I can make to this horn? If I\\\'m looking for a new neck, which one\\\'s will fit? I think the horn has personality and I\\\'m probably going to keep it for a backup eventually, but to your knowledge were these Unison\\\'s solid instruments or should I expect them to \\\"not hold\\\" well and fall apart down the road, like some of the other early Taiwanese horns. Also, the one concern I have with this horn is the intonation, as I have found that in a group setting, I\\\'m getting a little \\\"wackiness\\\" in the upper \\\"A\\\" and \\\"G\\\" area. Is there any way to correct this? Right now I\\\'m playing a Vandoren Jumbo Java T45 usually with Rico, Rico Plasticover 2.5\\\'s, sometimes a Forestone.\\r\\n Apologize for so many questions, but any information you can give is REALLY appreciated.\\r\\nThanks for your time,\\r\\nErnesto Ponce" Answer:

Unisons are very nice instruments......I worked for them about 15 years ago as their designer......get our solid copper neck with nodal weights.....it will really open up the tonal spectrum....our Fat Boy alto mouthpiece will improve the response and intonation....let me know if you have any more questions!

Marcus: The clarinet peg works just fine for oboe.....I\'ve never tried an English horn on tat peg, but don\'t think there would be any problem at all....there are two peg slots......I have never seen or heard of any bell damage of any form or fashion resulting from the use of SaxRax stands.....let me know if you have any further questions!

Corey: the owner of the factory who will build this horn for us is making a trip from Taiwan to visit with me in New Orleans NEXT WEEK so we can discuss this project face to face.....as usual, it has so far cost more and taken longer than I had planned!
